to Sister's Uptown Bookstore |
|
My name is Janifer
Wilson and I am the owner of Sister's Uptown Bookstore, one of the
few Black-owned bookstores in all of New York City.
A few years ago, I took a step of faith and opened Sister's Uptown
Bookstore, because there were no resources for members of the community
to nurture their minds, souls and hearts with the present- and past-day
works of our gifted authors, intellectuals and masters of spoken
word. Our children were lacking positive images of self, and our
education system was failing to provide our youth with a proficiency
in the three Rs: Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.
Today, Sister's Uptown Bookstore has become a positive staple
of our community, a place where members can come and receive their
daily dose of literary nourishment, love and encouragement. Sister's
Uptown is a community resource for the exchange of information
and ideas. We have established book clubs for adults and children
of all ages, a weekly meditation series and on-going storytelling
programs. In addition, we host the P.R.E.P. Program (Promoting
Responsible Enthusiastic Pupils) weekly to provide our youth with
essential skills to excel at the three Rs and propel themselves
toward a higher education.
